After the thirteenth stage in the Tour, Mads Pedersen now also won the thirteenth stage in the Vuelta. In a sprint uphill, the green jersey wearer was supreme. Tim Merlier had to pass in the final kilometer. “It cracked in the head.”

Tim Merlier was disappointed afterwards. The Belgian champion had to pass in the final. “I didn’t have the legs, did I?” he responded. “I didn’t feel so good in the beginning, had some problems with the warmest. But I found relief and it got better after that. I was good in the final, but I had no more acceleration on the steepest part. And then it cracks in the head. Tuesday will be difficult again, the final will be even more difficult. Hopefully it will be the final stage in Madrid.”

Pedersen: “Think of Bennett”

“I’m happy with this victory, the team has worked hard for it and then it’s nice if you can finish it,” Pedersen said. “I am also happy that I am even more firmly in the green. But I also have to think of Sam Bennett. He was my main competitor but had to give up due to a positive corona test. That’s too bad.”

Coquard: “I will stay in this Vuelta”

“I was well placed, but at the end it fell silent for a while. As a result, I was not in Pedersen’s wheel. The fact that Ackermann went from far was not to my advantage. But Pedersen was very strong. Everyone talks about Evenepoel, but I think Pedersen is the strongest man in this Vuelta. It’s a shame, because I would have loved to have won.”

Earlier, Cofidis teammate Cimolai said that Coquard would leave the Vuelta tonight to take points in other one-day races in the battle to stay in the World Tour next season. “I’ve still decided on that,” said the Frenchman. “I normally stay in this Vuelta and want to win the stage on Tuesday.”
