Europe has been hit by rapidly rising gas and electricity prices for several weeks now. The Serie A has also decided to take a (first) measure. For example, football stadiums may be lit less during match days to save energy.

The Serie A has decided that stadiums can be lit for a maximum of four hours on match days. The floodlights will not be allowed to be turned on until an hour before kick-off for matches that start early in the evening.

It is estimated that the measures shouldlead to a 25% reduction in the time the facilities are lit.

“This is a first step,” said league president Lorenzo Casini. “We have to set a good example in these difficult times.”

Further switches from lighting to energy-saving LED technologies or the installation of solar panels on stadiums are under discussion, the statement said.
