Club Brugge opens its Champions League adventure next Wednesday with a home match against Bayer Leverkusen. In the run-up to that game, the national champion already filled up with confidence with a 4-0 win against Cercle Brugge. Although the derby did yield the necessary casualties.

Casper Nielsen, for example, was lucky to be able to continue playing after a tough tackle by Jean Marcelin. For Clinton Mata, things looked much more serious. After a duel with Da Silva Lopes, the Bruges strong-holder in the defense twisted his ankle. It immediately became clear that he could not continue and he was also substituted.

Further investigations should indicate the exact seriousness of his injury, but coach Carl Hoefkens fears the worst. “Clinton is someone who always keeps going, it was clear it looked serious,” the coach said on the club’s website. Still, Hoefkens retains a glimmer of hope. “It is now too early to draw any conclusions. I hope to recover him by Wednesday, but we have to wait and see.”

Club hopes of course that the damage is not too bad and that Mata can resume quickly. If he is not there against Leverkusen, Hoefkens does have the necessary alternatives. Dedryck Boyata for example. Against Cercle, the coach decided to pull Denis Odoi back a row and place Raphael Onyedika in midfield. He immediately left a good impression on his debut. “As far as Onyedika is concerned, I am very satisfied. He was able to show today what we had seen in scouting”, Hoefkens is enthusiastic.
