Serena Williams (276)

The chronicle of an announced farewell? Serena Williams was defeated by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA-46) last night – in the third round of the US Open – 7-5, 6-7 (4/7) and 6-1. The US Open appears to be Williams’ last tennis tournament. “I don’t think I’ll go back on my decision to quit. But never say never.”

Serena Williams burst into tears last night after her loss to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA-46). The 40-year-old tennis legend remained vague about the time for a long time, but Williams will soon say goodbye to tennis.

The 3rd round of the US Open seems to be the end station of her career for the time being. Yet the American still keeps the door a symbolic crack. “I don’t think I’ll be back on track again, but never say never,” said a clearly emotional Williams.

The ex-number 1 in the world also took the time to thank her family on the field. “It all started because of my parents. They are the reason I’m here. She and of course my sister, Venus Williams. There would never have been Serena Williams without Venus Williams. Thank you!”

The 40-year-old tennis legend already defeated number 80 Danka Kovinic and number 2 in the world Anett Kontaveit at this US Open. In the third round she did not let herself be put aside by Tomljanovic without a fight.

She narrowly lost the first set 7-5 and won the tie-break in the second set. However, it cost a lot of energy. In set 3 her Australian opponent showed no mercy: 6-1.
