“It’s quiet, which means it’s going well.” Mark van Bommel walked into the press room in a good mood on Friday afternoon. After six consecutive league victories, he can make history with Antwerp on Sunday by equaling the 21 on 21 from 1930. “Faith is rising and people are talking about it, but right now we have to keep calm.”

“The fact that we are on a record course means that we are doing well”, Van Bommel looked ahead to Westerlo’s arrival. “Faith is rising and people are talking about it, but we mustn’t start preying on it or overreaching. One day that first defeat will follow. And what are you going to do then?”

Belgian Van Bommel

Van Bommel does not want to underestimate PhD student Westerlo. “We are far from that stage, that as a top club you can say: today it will be 2-0 or 3-0. Moreover, the Belgian competition is more difficult than I thought. In the Netherlands, with all due respect, you can list a number of opponents from which you are sure to win. You can forget that in Belgium. In the Netherlands you have to play football at all costs. That is not necessary here and I think that is fine.”

“Whether I am more of a Belgian than a Dutch trainer? Look, I grew up close to the Dutch border (laughs). We would like to play good football, but in the end it’s about winning.”

Stengs deployable, worry about English

To book a seventh consecutive league win, Van Bommel can count on an extra weapon. Newcomer Calvin Stengs is eligible to play and can start if necessary. Muja is also training again. Frey and Balikwisha stay out, as does Engels. It’s been quiet around that last one for a while. Engels dropped out in the spring with an Achilles tendon injury and seemed to be gradually ready for a comeback during the summer internship.

“After that, Björn started having trouble again”, Van Bommel gave a state of affairs. “He visited some doctors externally to get the injury under control and make the step back to the group, but it’s going slower than we expected. This is especially bad for him. He had been rehabilitating for so long and then fell out again. Mentally deal with it. We try to help him as best we can.”
