Remco Evenepoel about competitor who starts after positive test: “Keep me far away from Ayuso”

After his fall, Remco Evenepoel came to the start of the thirteenth stage of the Vuelta the day before with a large bandage on his leg, but he said it did not cause much hindrance. The positive corona test of Juan Ayuso, who appeared at the start despite his (asymptomatic) corona infection, caused Evenepoel more concern. “I’m going to stay far away from him at the start,” said the red jersey wearer.

19-year-old UAE rider Juan Ayuso, who is fifth in the general classification, tested positive for corona, but is asymptomatic and was therefore allowed to appear at the start, which he did. Evenepoel had his reservations about this. “I think it’s risky. In any case, I’m going to stay far away from him at the start line,” said the general classification leader in the Vuelta. “It’s not up to me to say anything about it, but it’s nice for him that he feels better,” our compatriot told the English-speaking press a little further on. “However, I would advise him to think carefully about it, as he could be seriously ill within a few days. That’s how it went with my teammate Pieter Serry and Tim Declercq has even more serious problems.”

Evenepoel had good news about the consequences of his fall the day before. “I slept well and did not suffer from the abrasions. There’s a big bandage on my leg, but in a place that doesn’t really fold. It is not on that knee, which moves continuously. The plaster does not bother. The wound on my hand will be healed tomorrow, so I hope I can ride without gloves again.”
