Carapaz gives his Vuelta color, Evenepoel keeps his grip on the red jersey despite the crash | Vuelta

VueltaRichard Carapaz has saved his Vuelta. The Olympic champion dropped in the rankings last week, but was now allowed to celebrate at Peñas Blancas for Wilco Kelderman. Leader Remco Evenepoel crashed at 45 kilometers without much trouble and kept control in the group of favorites on the final climb. Status quo in the top of the standings.

The fall of Evenepoel:

New arrival uphill, new appointment for Remco Evenepoel in his red Vuelta quest. Our compatriot told us in advance that he would prefer to see a large group of attackers leave who would compete for the stage victory. The good listener knew that Evenepoel wanted to spare his afflicted men as much as possible.

No sooner said than done. With 32 people they went on an adventure early in the stage. Evenepoel had a pawn with Vervaeke and thus saw his wish fulfilled. Bakelants, Taminiaux and Vermeersch were ahead of the other Belgians. Also names like Carapaz, Kelderman, Vine, Soler and Champoussin.

The peloton let go and so the leading group could quickly count on a large lead. Evenepoel had to put Devenyns and Masnada to work in the second part of the ride in order not to let the encore get too big. The men at the front started the 19 kilometer long final climb to Peñas Blancas with a 10 minute bonus.

Evenepoel himself had to cycle uphill with torn pants. The red jersey slipped 45 kilometers from the finish in a descending bend. Fortunately, there was not much damage. Our compatriot went afterwards to get a story from the jury car about the engines. “They stand still after every corner,” it said.

Standing still was hardly done on the final climb. The leaves were falling from the trees both in front and in the back. In the break, Fabbro proved an excellent locomotive for Kelderman. Only the strongest could compete. In the peloton, the sagging Vervaeke and Van Wilder ensured control.

While Gesbert opened the debates for the stage victory, Evenepoel in the favorites group did not miss out on pinpricks from Mas and Rodriguez. The red jersey remained in control and set its own pace in the final kilometers.

Up front, Carapaz did it differently. The Olympic champion waited for his moment to strike mercilessly at one and a half kilometers from the finish. Stage victory for Carapaz on Peñas Blancas. Despite his fall, Evenepoel is one step closer to his red dream.
