Flanders has recently been spoiled with new cycling champions such as Wout van Aert, Remco Evenepoel and Cian Uijtdebroeks. But last week we lost a very big champion with Herman Vanspringel. The fact that Vanspringel has meant a lot to Dutch cycling was once again apparent at his funeral, which started at 11 a.m. in the De Volle Vaart community center in Grobbendonk. Generations like Eddy Merckx, Rik Van Looy, Walter Godefroot and Jan Janssen wanted to be there to pay a last tribute to ‘Monsieur Bordeaux-Paris’. 600 seats were placed in the building. They are all occupied. A hundred people watch the ceremony outside on a large screen.

At the beginning of the service a farewell word was read on behalf of Herman Vanspringel’s wife. She told that she always called her husband sweetheart and how he looked surprised when she called him Herman.
