After the elimination of Maryna Zanevska (WTA-97) in the second round, Alison Van Uytvanck is the only remaining Belgian tennis player in singles at the US Open. After the American Grand Slam, she will also be the highest placed Belgian in the WTA ranking.

In the virtual ranking, the 28-year-old Flemish Brabant is currently winning two places, from 43 to 41, while Elise Mertens already loses at least nine places and drops to 42nd place for the time being.

“I worked really hard for this,” said Van Uytvanck on Tuesday after her first-round victory against Venus Williams. “After my back problems, I did everything I could to be able to stand here. It was worth it, because I got to play against a legend on Arthur-Ashe. I was very happy with my performance. Hopefully I can continue on this momentum.”

On Thursday evening, Van Uytvanck will give the French Clara Burel (WTA-130) a match on court 12 for a place in the sixteenth finals. If she wins that match, she can move up another six places in the virtual ranking. A 37th place in August 2018 is her highest ranking to date in the world ranking.

Yanina Wickmayer eliminated in first round doubles

Yanina Wickmayer and Yulia Putintseva were unable to qualify for the second round of the doubles on Wednesday. The Belgian-Kazakh duo lost 4-6, 7-6 (9/7) and 6-1 to the Swedish Rebecca Peterson and the Russian Anastasia Potapova in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Sander Gillé eliminated in first round doubles

Sander Gillé also failed to qualify for the second round of the doubles together with Lukasz Kubot on Wednesday. The Belgian-Polish duo suffered a narrow defeat against the Russian Aslan Karatsev and the Australian Luke Saville. In 2 hours and 44 minutes it became 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (9/7) and 6-2.

Gillé and Kubot miss a duel against the American Rajeev Ram and the British Joe Salisbury, the first seeded and defending champions in Flushing Meadows. They eliminated Argentinian Federico Coria and Colombian Cristian Rodriguez in the first round 6-4 twice.
