Remarkable sponsorship deal in cycling land. Demi Vollering (27), Lotte Kopecky’s Dutch teammate at Team SD Worx-Protime, has signed a contract with Nike.

Sponsorship deals between large companies and cyclists are of course not exceptional (just think of the deal between Wout van Aert and Red Bull), but this agreement between Nike and Demi Vollering stands out. With the exception of Mark Cavendish – who races with Nike shoes – and in the past of course Lance Armstrong, Nike did not sponsor any cyclists or female cyclists. Until now.

“I am proud and grateful to partner with Nike. With their support, I will pursue my dreams and goals for years to come. Moreover, I am aware of my role within women’s cycling and women’s sports in general and the opportunities that offers. Together with Nike I can achieve common goals and spread my message effectively. We want to inspire many people to get moving and together we will make dreams come true,” said Vollering’s Instagram page.

The Dutchwoman is today at the start of the Tour of Spain for women. There she will look for her first victory of the season. Last year she came second in the Vuelta Femenina, after Annemiek van Vleuten, who has since retired.

Vollering is not the only rider who signed a nice deal with a large company. Earlier this week, the Swiss (luxury) watch company Breitling appointed Lotte Kopecky as its ambassador.
