Marc Brys can now call himself national coach. The 61-year-old trainer signs a contract with Cameroon until 2028. The ex-coach of OH Leuven has taken his first challenge after his dismissal in October. He follows in the footsteps of Hugo Broos. “The puzzle made sense sportingly and financially.”

From Den Dreef to the Paul Biya Stadium in Cameroon. That is the step that Marc Brys has taken.

The 61-year-old selector was dismissed from OH Leuven in October 2023 after a disappointing start to the season. He had to say goodbye to the club after more than three seasons.

Brys is not thinking about retirement yet. He looked around for foreign adventures, finally noticing “the Indomitable Lions”. There he is joined by old acquaintance Joachim Mununga as T2.

He succeeds Rigobert Song at Cameroon. The trainer – who spent his playing career mainly in Turkey – had a disappointing African Cup of Nations with his country. It ended in the 1/8th finals.

Our compatriot must live up to the high expectations in the future. He will have the opportunity until 2028 to follow in the footsteps of fellow Belgian Hugo Broos, who won the African Cup for Cameroon in 2017.

Brys’ first assignments will be two qualifying matches for the next African Cup of Nations on June 3 and 10.

Brys: “A challenge, I have never been a national coach”

Marc Brys lives in Crete after leaving OHL. “I told my wife: it was good. We are going there to take it easy. But the puzzle was right for Cameroon, sportingly and financially.”

“It is also a challenge to work in a different way. I have never been a national coach. You have to try to bind a group that you see very little.”

Cameroon is not the only country that has made inquiries in recent months. “I also spoke with Ghana. And a week ago Tunisia was also in the running. Have any Belgian clubs been asked? I definitely didn’t want to go back to Belgium. I had seen the story there a bit.”

Did the success of colleague Hugo Broos play a role in Cameroon? “It was not explicitly discussed, but it must have played a role. The Belgian coaches are finally better positioned in the market. As trainers, we not only have to sell ourselves, but also advertise for our Belgian colleagues. They already had that in the Netherlands. previously understood.”
