Update The fourth stage of the Tour of Valencia has been shortened. The Saturday stage was originally going to finish in Vall d’Ebo, but the organization decided in extremis to place the finish fifteen kilometers earlier, at the top of the Alto del Miserat. The reason is now known: a spectator who was at the original finish line has died.
“Due to force majeure, the organization has decided to finish the stage at the top of El Miserat,” the organization wrote on X this afternoon. “The riders will then ride neutralized to Vall d’Ebo. Out of respect, all ceremonial acts will be suspended today.” In an official statement, the organization also announced that the ride was shortened due to a ‘serious incident’ and that the ceremonies will be held on Sunday morning before the ride.
In the run-up to the Alto del Miserat (5.7 km at 9.3%), there was a leading group of seven, including two Dutchmen: Alex Molenaar and Sam Oomen. Although the finish line came earlier, they would not make it. They were caught six kilometers from the finish (on the Alto del Miserat).
The organization of the Tour of Valencia has now announced the reason for shortening the stage. A spectator was killed at the original finish in Vall d’Ebo. An air ambulance arrived for the victim, who was also resuscitated, but to no avail. “The organization deeply regrets this sad event and expresses its condolences to the family of the deceased,” it said on the social media of the Tour of Valencia.
