MATCH REPORTThe duel in the basement of the rankings between RWDM and Standard provided an enjoyable spectacle, but no winner: the score was 2-2. Standard still cannot win under Leko. RWDM took its first point since December 16. Both teams are not making much progress with this draw.
The cellar cracker between RWDM and Standard Liège was labeled as a high-risk match. Result: extra police units, significantly more police officers than usual and police on horseback. In addition, many streets leading to the stadium were cordoned off with road barricades, to keep any troublemakers at a sufficient distance after the match.
Compared to the midweek match at Union, RWDM coach Claudio Caçapa made three changes to his starting team, two of which were forced. Reine-Adélaïde and Dwomoh were suspended and were replaced by Mercier and Abé. Camara, who was going strong against the leader, had to give up his place to Biron, the striker who ultimately did not move to Ghent.
Despite the 0-1 defeat against Antwerp, Standard coach Ivan Leko must apparently have been satisfied with the performance of his team, because he gave the same basic team confidence for the match against the Brussels club in need of points.
The Rouches started brightly and saw their efforts rewarded early on with a goal from Kanga on a pass from Price. However, the fun was short-lived, because not much later the plates were hanging in balance again. After a nice action through Carlos and Mansoni, the latter was able to put the ball in front of goal. Gueye couldn’t reach it with his head, but Biron was in the right place to beat goalkeeper Bodart with a hard bang. RWDM became the better team and was able to threaten twice more. Mercier and Biron saw their goal attempts blocked.
Early in the second half, Kanga saw his second goal rightly disallowed for offside. The Rouches then got away twice when Carlos first found goalkeeper Bodart in his way and then Mercier shot high over the goal from close range.
Two goals in thirty seconds
When substitute Camara was able to make it 2-1 more than five minutes before the end with a lower slider out of reach of Bodart, things did not look good for the Rouches, but thirty seconds later everything had to be done again when Yeboah, assisted by Dewaele, scored the could make 2-2. Both teams won’t make much progress with a division of points.
End of second half
Yellow card for Wilfried Kanga
Yellow card for Jonathan Panzo
2-2 GOAL by Kelvin Yeboah!
Marlon Fossey is replaced by Gilles Dewaele
Souleyman Doumbia is replaced by Kelvin Yeboah
2-1 GOAL by Ilay Camara!
On a deep pass, Camara can play out a defender and make it 2-1 with a low shot.
Mickaël Biron is replaced by Pathe Mboup
Xavier Mercier is replaced by Ilay Camara
Nervousness is increasing in both teams. More sloppiness in the game and fewer opportunities.
RWDM the better team
The home team is explicitly looking for a second goal.
Makhtar Gueye is replaced by Frederic Soelle Soelle
Carlos Alberto is replaced by Malcolm Ebiowei
Mercier misses the chance for a Brussels lead
An opportunity that should not be missed, but Mercier still managed to blast the ball high over goal from close range on a pass from Biron.
Yellow card for Marlon Fossey
Isaac Price is replaced by Jonathan Panzo
Moussa Djenepo is replaced by Kamal Sowah
Bodart prevents Carlos from 2-1
Great opportunity for the home team: Carlos is sent into the lane by Biron in the large rectangle. The Brazilian shoots straight at goalkeeper Bodart, keeping Standard in the match.
Kanga’s 1-2 disallowed for offside
Kanga scored too easily early in the second half, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
