Roberto Martinez has reversed a controversial decision he made a few weeks ago. He admits he made a mistake in voting for ‘The Best’ awards.

A few weeks ago, Lionel Messi was awarded The Best’ Award, which rewards the best player of the year 2023. An award that was surprising given the career of the brilliant Argentinian. When looking at the coaches’ votes, several choices were questioned, including Roberto Martinez’s.

For example, instead of choosing Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappé over Lionel Messi and Bernardo Silva, the former Red Devils coach voted for Marcelo Brozovic. He justified this by pointing to his contribution to Inter Milan’s run in the Champions League and his fantastic World Cup with Croatia, where they finished third. The problem? The World Cup in Qatar was no longer part of the tournaments on which one could base votes for a top 3.

In an interview with the newspaper A Bola, Roberto Martinez admitted that he had made a mistake: “If I voted for Brozovic, it is because I made a mistake about the period. If you look at the voting behavior of the others, I don’t think that I was the only one who made a mistake. It was logical that everyone looked at the performance at the World Cup. And there are so many individual prizes these days. I have a hard time with it, because football is and remains a team sport.”
