KRC Genk has started the second half of the season very disappointingly. Racing could not win a single match in 2024, and even lost to relegation candidate OH Leuven last Wednesday. Coach Wouter Vrancken therefore decided to intervene.

Racing started the season with the necessary expectations, but things went wrong already in the European preliminaries. Ultimately, Genk had to make peace with the safety net of the Conference League. In the third European competition, however, the group stage was the final destination. And in the Croky Cup, the Limburgers were surprised by the ailing KV Oostende.

As a result, coach Wouter Vrancken’s team only has the Jupiler Pro League to make something good of the season. And the convincing 3-0 win just before New Year against defending champion Antwerp FC also gave the best indications for the coming months. But Genk has started the second half of the season very disappointingly.

Thunder sermon Vrancken

After the points division against Cercle Brugge and last weekend’s late equalizer against STVV, things also went wrong in Leuven on Wednesday: 2-1 defeat. And it wasn’t just the result that was a thorn in the side. Vrancken was particularly upset by the way his players presented themselves, with a great lack of fighting spirit.

The next day he put the dressing room in place. “I have stated things clearly. In a slightly different tone than now,” Vrancken was quoted in his press chat at HBvL. “The message certainly got across. A discussion started for a while, but I think it could be even more in that area. It is the players who try to pull the cart on the field, who also do so in those conversations.”

Paintsil nailed it

He also decided to take Joseph Paintsil aside. He was substituted at half-time against OHL because he flirted too emphatically with red with his irascible attitude. “He realizes that such reactions are not possible, but he must also show on the field that he has learned his lesson. You can’t keep tapping the same nail. He must realize that he is not only disadvantaging his team but also sidelining himself. Anyone who is constantly busy with peripheral matters cannot play to their qualities,” said the trainer.
