Barcelona chairman Laporta surprised: “Anderlecht and Club Brugge want to participate in Super League” | Sport

--

Surprising statement from Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta. He told the Spanish radio station RAC1 that many European teams are open to a Super League. Also Anderlecht and Club Brugge. At Anderlecht they do not comment on that statement.

The full list of clubs that according to Laporta are “ready to immediately enter a Super League”: “Inter Milan, Napoli, AS Roma, AC Milan, Marseille, Benfica, Sporting CP, Porto, Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, Anderlecht, Club Bruges and every Spanish team outside Atlético Madrid.” No English teams, they are now unanimously against the Super League.

But the most surprising thing about Laporta’s statements is that the Barcelona president mentions Anderlecht and Club Brugge. However, at the end of December, when it was announced that the Super League could be created, the Purple & White openly spoke out against a Super League and said, like many other clubs, that it would remain affiliated with the UEFA competitions.

The Purple & White does not respond to Laporta’s statement. “Nothing has changed compared to last time. It is not an issue at all at the moment.’ Anderlecht focuses on the competition and wants to play in Europe next year.

Yet, according to Laporta, the Super League is “more alive than ever”. He would even like to start next season, or in 2025-2026 at the latest. “A competition with 16 to 18 clubs is a nice group. That’s how the European Cup I started in 1955. And it has grown into the strongest club competition in the world. It doesn’t matter to me that the English clubs don’t want to participate. They already have a Super League in themselves with the Premier League. Still, I find it bizarre, because every club earns at least 100 million euros when participating.”
