Club Brugge has suddenly become Union SG’s major challenger. And yet until November they only had to swallow criticism. The defense in particular had to hear a lot. Brandon Mechele still doesn’t understand it well.

From September to mid-November, Club could barely keep a clean sheet. There was then a loud call for a new defender. “I still don’t understand that criticism. How many goals conceded do we count? Eighteen?”, said Mechele in an interview with KVW for the match against Kortrijk. “The lowest number of goals conceded in 1A, right? Less than one per match! Only the media made that a problem.”

“From journalists who have never played football at a high level and who then want to lecture us? Recently there was a journalist who explained to Deila how to approach it! And people are taking that over, right? Didn’t Carl Hoefkens’ dismissal also start in the press?”

In the meantime there don’t seem to be any more problems. “I never noticed any doubt internally. Because if you saw how few chances we gave away then… Most of the goals conceded were botched goals, due to small mistakes that are now happening. It just took some time for all the puzzle pieces to fall together. I went to the left, De Cuyper on the right and Meijer on the left flank, which provided more stability.”
