Besnik Hasi will play against his ex-club Anderlecht tonight. The coach of KV Mechelen took over from Steven Defour just before the winter break and has guided Malinwa to a provisional eighth place. He thought it was too early for Defour to become head coach.
Hasi obviously knows Defour well. “I haven’t seen or heard from Steven since I’ve been in Mechelen. But I sent him my greetings via Vanderbiest, and he answered them. Everything went too fast for Steven. Mechelen should have taken more time with him,” says he in LDH.
“He was too inexperienced as a coach and burned himself. I, for example, am a different coach than when I left Anderlecht in 2016. I am calmer, understand the players better, and am more flexible on a tactical level. In the past, I only wanted to be in a Playing a 4-3-3 formation. Now I adapt to the players I have.”
By the way, Defour was one of Hasi’s favorite players. “Speaking of Steven, I did everything to get him to Olympiacos when he was at Burnley. The chairman recalled that he made the difference during extra time with Anderlecht in Athens in the Europa League in 2016 (1-2). But In the end it was too expensive.”
