Japanese police have opened an investigation after allegations of sexual aggression against Junya Ito, a player from French Reims with a past at KRC Genk.
“We have received a criminal complaint against him and have opened an investigation,” an Osaka police spokesperson confirmed, without elaborating.
The 30-year-old Ito played for Genk between 2019 and 2022. The wing attacker was good for 29 goals and 49 assists in 144 games, after which Reims stole him away. The Japanese is currently playing in the Asian Cup in Qatar, where Iran awaits in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
According to Japanese media, Ito has been accused of sexual aggression by two women. The facts are said to have taken place in a hotel in Osaka in June 2023 after an international match between Japan and Peru. In a response through his lawyer, Ito denies the allegations and calls them “completely unfounded.”
Japanese national coach Hajime Moriyasu also responded in the meantime, but remained silent. “I am not fully aware (of the allegations). I will deal with it after studying them.” (Belga)
