It promises to be very busy hours for many Belgian clubs, because many deals will be completed at the absolute end of the winter mercato. For example, on Thursday afternoon there was transfer news at Standard, OH Leuven and AA Gent.

OHL strict defender

We start at Den Dreef, where trainer Oscar Garcia can welcome another defensive asset for the battle for retention. OHL announced that it has strengthened itself with Franco Russo. The defender is rented from Ludogorets for the rest of the season, with an option to purchase.

The 29-year-old Argentinian previously spent almost his entire career in Spain, including in Mallorca. “He is fast, agile, strong header and calm on the ball. With his experience and competitive mentality, he will be able to add value to our young defense,” Garcia says.

Standard shops at Genoa again

Standard has also brought in a new player. They go shopping again at sister club Genoa, where Farouka Cissé is taken away. The 19-year-old German, who previously also played for Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in youth, signed until 2025.

The central defender is initially brought in for SL16, which is still fighting for retention in the Challenger Pro League. He is already the third signing in two days, after Kuavita and Brrou were brought back on Wednesday.

AA Gent still cashes on Chakvetadze

Finally, AA Gent managed to realize an unexpected outgoing transfer. The newspapaer know that the Buffalos are now also saying goodbye to Giorgi Chakvetadze. The Georgian attacking midfielder emerged as a top talent in 2017 and made a promising debut. However, after suffering injuries he completely disappeared.

In recent seasons, Ghent has already rented him out to Hamburg and Slovan Bratislava and this season Chakvetadze was posted to Watford. The 24-year-old seems to have found his niche there, because he is a permanent fixture there and Watford is now also said to have exercised his purchase option. As a result, Ghent collects an unexpected transfer fee of 2.5 million euros.
