All’s well that ends well for Yorbe Vertessen: the 23-year-old Belgian striker leaves Eindhoven for Union Berlin after 15 years. For a while, Noa Lang’s injury seemed to throw a spanner in the works, but the deal was finalized on the final day of the winter mercato. He signed a contract until 2028 in the Berlin capital.
Yorbe Vertessen has been with PSV since 2009 after his first stints at Rillaar and later Westerlo. The Belgian youth international made his debut in PSV’s main squad in 2020, scoring 18 times in 102 matches.
In the return round of last season, he came to play football in Belgium on a rental basis and narrowly missed out on the title with Union. He scored 4 goals in 20 matches for the Brussels team.
He started the season again in Eindhoven and was also given playing opportunities, but he could not count on a starting position with the all-powerful Dutch leader. However, he has already played 29 times in 2023-2024, scoring 5 goals. He was only in the starting lineup 6 times.
Vertessen prefers playing to the title and that is why he was happy to respond to the interest of Union Berlin, which is less successful this season as 15th in the Bundesliga. The number 4 of the 2022-2023 competition will have to fight against relegation.
With the serious injury of PSV striker colleague Noa Lang, there seemed to be a problem – his agent spoke of a hostage situation, but in the end the lamp club does not stop Vertessen.
Vertessen gets the number 14 at Union Berlin. The two met last season in the 1/8th finals of the Europa League: in the clash between Union and Union in Germany (3-3), the Belgian was good for 1 goal and 1 assist.
“The Bundesliga is something special and Union is that too,” Vertessen says on his new team’s website. “I’m happy to be here and hopefully I can help the team and the club forget the tough past months.”
“I’m looking forward to getting to know my new colleagues, the stadium and the fans. When we played here last year, the atmosphere was unique.”
