This concerns an incident from 2019, before the match between Celta and Espanyol. The captain of the home team is said to have touched the breasts of the woman wearing a parakeet costume (Periquita) to represent Espanyol just before kick-off – when hands were being shaken between both teams.

The case against Mallo – who denies wrongdoing – was initially dismissed, but the decision was later overturned on appeal. The Spanish sports newspaper ASH reported that the player told the court that television footage of the incident showed he had done nothing wrong. However, the court ruled that the images were sufficient to appear in court, which is expected to take place in July.

“Celta and Espanyol have concluded that there is no evidence,” said Mallo’s manager, who now plays for Brazilian Internacional. “The Spanish Football Association and La Liga have also done nothing about it. We hope that the judiciary will act in good faith and that justice will prevail.”

“When Hugo Mallo arrived to greet the mascots, he gave his hand as usual to the male parakeet (Periquito), but when he reached Madam, who at that moment was playing the role of the female parakeet, he put his hands under the suit and touched her breasts. According to the woman, he grabbed her breasts with his hands and started making movements,” the original complaint states.

To which an appeal judge referred again. “Although it seems to happen quickly, it takes longer than the rest of the greetings that happen before, so we do see something happening with the mascot (Periquita) and the player as the mascot moves. She steps away from the player and stands behind the male mascot. And we can see from the player’s position that he made these touches possible.”
