The Japanese police have opened an investigation after allegations of sexual aggression against Junya Ito (30), a player from the French Reims with a past at KRC Genk.
“We have received a criminal complaint against him and have opened an investigation,” an Osaka police spokesperson confirmed, without going into further detail.
The 30-year-old Ito played for Genk between 2019 and 2022. The wing attacker was good for 29 goals and 49 assists in 144 games, after which Reims stole him away. The Japanese is currently working at the Asian Cup in Qatar, where Iran awaits in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
According to Japanese media, Ito has been accused of sexual aggression by two women. The facts are said to have taken place in a hotel in Osaka in June 2023 after an international match between Japan and Peru. After a ‘drunk’ evening, the two allegedly ended up in a room with Ito. “When I woke up, Ito was sitting on me,” said one of the women. “The room was dark, but I could see his face. I still remember it very well.”
Ito is said to have proposed financial compensation, accompanied by a confidentiality clause, before the complaints were filed.
In a response through his lawyer, Ito denies the accusations and calls them “completely unfounded.” Japanese national coach Hajime Moriyasu also responded in the meantime, but remained silent. “I’m not fully aware (of the allegations). I will deal with it after studying them.”
