Italian teammates Alessandro Tonelli and Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group – Bardiani) achieved a one-two victory on Wednesday from an early breakaway in the opening stage of the Tour of Valencia, a five-day Spanish stage race for the Pro Series. Remarkable, because in the final phase the two got stuck in the ribbons after a trajectory error.
In the hilly opening stage of 167 kilometers between Benicassim and Castellon, an early breakaway of seven riders took such a lead that it turned out to be enough for a stage win. On the final climb of more than seven kilometers, the Italian VF Group – Bardiani had the two strongest riders at the front: teammates Manuele Tarozzi and Alessandro Tonelli took the lead together.
After a mistake in trajectory by the two at a roundabout in the streets of the arrival city of Castellon, Tonelli got into a scuffle with a barrier tape, but Tarozzi waited for his teammate again afterwards and gave the stage victory and the first leader’s jersey to the 31- year-old Tonelli. Spanish champion Oier Lazkano took third place with a late attack from the peloton, 1:09 behind the Italian leading duo.
