The Red Devils go to the European Championship in Germany as the seed. But whether that is with or without Thibaut Courtois remains to be seen. Analysts Olivier Deschacht, Jan Mulder and Timmy Simons discussed the situation between Tedesco and the goalkeeper. “I think I’m on the coach’s side.”

“Life is too short to regret the past. That is why I want to open the door completely,” national coach Domenico Tedesco told VTM NIEUWS about two weeks ago. The Courtois case, in full swing since June 19 when Courtois suddenly left the base camp, continues to demand attention, including in the VTM studio in the run-up to the match against Azerbaijan. “It’s mainly about stubbornness,” Deschacht said. “Thibaut is very principled and above all stubborn. I think they should sit down together. Maybe with Jan (Mulder, ed.) there.” (laughs) Mulder: “I think I’m on the trainer’s side. Courtois then suddenly left (during the international break in June, ed.).”

After which Simons, trainer at second division club Dender, replied: “As a coach you cannot win that battle. You can create clarity and demonstrate where the boundaries are, but you have to engage in dialogue. Otherwise it will stick.” Mulder did not fully agree with Simons’ opinion and responded. “It’s about a goalkeeper, right? Not because of a Hazard in great form at the front. A goalkeeper… Moreover, Courtois has also made mistakes. He may be the best goalkeeper in the world, but the difference with a Casteels or a Sels is not enormous.” To be continued no doubt.

LOOK. Tedesco: “I have reached out to Thibaut, now it is up to him to respond”

Especially because it remains to be seen whether Courtois will be fit for the European Championship in Germany, which starts on June 14. After a serious cruciate ligament injury sustained during Real Madrid training, the goalkeeper underwent knee surgery in August. Courtois is currently undergoing rehabilitation for at least six months: he would not be ready to play again until the end of March. Normally enough to still play for the Royal Dutch team towards the end of the season, to prepare themselves for the European Championship if possible. As a temporary replacement for Courtois, Real signed goalkeeper Kepa, to the dissatisfaction of third goalkeeper Lunin and his wife.
