It must have been almost a miracle that Jan Vertonghen kicked off against Ghent. Actually, the medical staff didn’t really think it was a great plan to let him play 90 minutes, but Vertonghen made the decision himself.

Vertonghen knows his body better than anyone else and wanted to play. But that was not evident. “Vertonghen suffered a setback yesterday after Friday’s training. He could barely walk. Somehow the medical staff got him ready,” said Brian Riemer. “Did he take painkillers? He took everything you can think of.”

And that wasn’t the only thing. “Jan was ill, but absolutely wanted to play. We will now have to deal with him sparingly in the coming weeks,” said Riemer, who apparently wanted to give a hint to Domenico Tedesco.

“No, I have nothing to do with that,” Riemer clarified. “I’m just saying that at the beginning of the week he couldn’t just walk. Many players wouldn’t have stepped on the field. But now he seems to have suffered another blow to the other ankle. Good decisions will have to be made, but Jan knows that.
