Remco Evenepoel has had a strong 2023. Although that was not enough to become Flandrien of the Year.
Remco Evenepoel shone again this year, with several resounding victories. However, that was not enough to walk away with the Flandrien of the Year trophy.
It is highly questionable whether Evenepoel himself will be awake at night about it. Winning this prize would certainly not have been on his list, although it is of course always a very nice way to receive some extra recognition for the work done.
In any case, it was a surprise that Jasper Philipsen became Flandrien of the Year, although he did not steal that prize. There was some surprise among the journalists, although it was also heard that Evenepoel had won a lot, but also failed to achieve certain objectives.
Particular attention was paid to his off day in the Vuelta, which immediately caused him to forget the final classification of the Tour of Spain.
“Isn’t that the fate of the rider who wants to be the absolute best?” asks Marc Sergeant in Het Nieuwsblad. “If one day it doesn’t work out, they all shoot at you. Evenepoel does not escape this law either. Anyone who receives a lot of attention does not only receive positive attention.”
