Will Wout van Aert ride the Giro or the Tour in 2024? According to the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the decision has already been made. That became clear two weeks ago, but has there been more news in the meantime?
In the week of the European Championships, Wout van Aert had already expressed his wish to one day ride the Giro. With next year’s Olympic Games in Paris immediately after the Tour, next year’s Giro would fit perfectly into that schedule.
And the Italian media believe they know that Wout van Aert will ride the Giro and that Jumbo-Visma wants to play him there to contest the final classification, with the ambition of a top 5. There are already a lot of time trial kilometers, which can be an advantage.
Not a ready-made replacement
“We want to send our younger talents to the Giro,” Merijn Zeeman now says With an open mind. “This year we were able to win the three rounds because we had partly divided the program of Roglic and Vingegaard differently.”
Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic is no longer part of Jumbo-Visma, because he moved to Bora-Hansgrohe. “I hope to be able to replace Primoz. Although there is currently no ready-to-go substitute. Without Primoz there are fewer difficult conversations, discussions and choices in the coaching group. On the other hand, he was so demanding that he lifted the team to a higher level.”
