Eric Gerets and Standard, it remains a special combination. The club legend has something to say about the arrival of Carl Hoefkens and the departure of Ronny Deila.
“I think it’s great for Carl. I wish many people success, but I wish him a little more. Especially at Standard,” it immediately sounds in Het Nieuwsblad.
Eric Gerets was the first to hear that Hoefkens was going to sign for Standard, because the ex-coach of Club Brugge called him for a last bit of advice, just before he was going to sign for Sclessin.
An opportunity for the Rouches, although according to Gerets he should still have been working at Club Brugge. “I thought he deserved more credit after his fantastic run in the Champions League. But that is the fate of a coach at a top club. If the results are bad, they will make different choices.”
Gerets had a lot of praise for Ronny Deila last season, but after his bizarre attitude about a possible departure to Club Brugge during his last weeks at Sclessin, the love for the Norwegian has cooled off.
“I was especially a fan of his Mexican assistant Efraìn Juarez. He is married to the daughter of one of my best friends. As for Deila: I still think he is a good trainer, but I was less appreciative of the way he left Standard. He should have just come clean. Honesty is the best policy.”
