Kevin Mirallas was not selected for the World Cup in Russia in 2018. Roberto Martinez’s decision was particularly hard.
When the Red Devils’ selection for the World Cup in Russia was announced, Kevin Mirallas was sitting on the beach with his wife and children.
“Half an hour before the announcement I still had not received a phone call,” he tells Eleven Insiders. “But I kept calm. I was convinced that I would go to the World Cup. When I was in the water, my wife shouted that I had a phone call.”
It was Roberto Martinez and Mirallas immediately saw the mood. “Martinez said he had too much respect for me to take me as a backup. That would have been too hard for me, he said.”
But Mirallas did not agree to that. “Why don’t you take me as a backup?” Mirallas asked. “But he didn’t answer that. That hit hard. I hung up the phone, told my wife and was in shock for three days. Mentally that was a bitter pill to swallow.”
And Mirallas goes one step further. “It’s selfish, but I didn’t want the Red Devils to win the World Cup at the time. When they were eliminated, I was obviously sad but at the same time relieved because I could have been champion as well.”
