Besnik Hasi actually came as a surprise as the new coach of KV Mechelen. Analyst Patrick Goots previously saw a relegation specialist appointed.
After Anderlecht, Hasi mainly coached abroad: Legia Warsaw, Olympiakos, Al Raed… He seemed to have disappeared from view in Belgium. “I had previously thought of a Hollerbach type: an expert in rescue operations, who has already proven that he can make a difference in a dressing room,” says Goots in GvA.
Hasi has also been linked to OH Leuven in recent weeks. “But Hasi is also a name that often makes the rounds at Belgian clubs. Once you have proven something as a trainer in Belgium, you remain in the back of the mind of the club leaders. His adventures abroad were not exactly success stories.”
For Goots, KV Mechelen now has to think long-term. “I assume that the club is already looking further than just at this season. I do not consider KV to be the ideal relegation candidate, but you now need someone who can withstand stress and can quickly get the team back on track.”
