Remco Evenepoel may win another prize tonight, but with a view to the future he could have his hands full with Joshua Tarling. The young Briton is the new sensation in time trial, the discipline that Evenepoel also needs.

Wielerkrant looks ahead to the battle between the two on the time trial bike that will occur often in the coming years. We do this in an exclusive conversation with someone who is ideally placed for this: Nico Mattan. “Tarling is a rider who I have known for two-three years and who rode in my team.”

The West Flemish refers to his youth team Flanderscolor – Galloo Team. “Three years ago I sent him on an internship to Spain with Klaas Lodewyck and Patrick Lefevere. He then received an offer from INEOS. His role model was Ganna and he now rides in his team. He can also learn a lot this way. .”

Tarling is the best time trialist of the moment

An Englishman will of course be more attracted to INEOS anyway. “For me, he is the best time trialist at the moment. He will beat Evenepoel 8 out of 10 times in a flat time trial. In a mountain stage in the Tour de France or something, he will never be able to beat Evenepoel, but Tarling is the greatest specialist in time trial.”

Mattan immediately makes a strong prediction. “If he participates in the Tour de France next year and there is a flat time trial of twenty kilometers, he will win. And that while he is now only 19. Tarling is the greatest talent for time trials that I have seen in the youth.”

Evenepoel is of course a complete rider

“Evenepoel is of course a complete rider. A talent and world time trial champion, but soon it will be Tarling who will become world time trial champion,” Mattan suspects. “I think he sits very nicely on his bike. He also comes from the track and he has a perfect position on his bike.”
