MATCHES According to the referee committee, Zeno Debast should have received a red card for his intervention on Cercle striker Kevin Denkey on Sunday. That is what Frank De Bleeckere says in his reflection on the past football weekend. “It was a very dangerous tackle with the studs on the calf.”
In the 25th minute of the match between Cercle and Anderlecht, Debast comes from behind Denkey and hits the Cercle player on the calf. Referee Jan Boterberg shows a yellow card, but VAR Lawrence Visser intervenes.
“Lawrence asks Jan Boterberg to view the images for a possible red card,” says De Bleeckere. “Jan stands by his decision to give a yellow card. We do not follow that. We consider this a red card. The player’s integrity is seriously ‘taken into account’ here (De Bleeckere meant endangered, ed.).”
“This is a very dangerous tackle with the studs on the calf and where the ball is unplayable. Fortunately, the intensity is not very high, but we do see a red card here. We believe that the VAR has rightly interpellated. This morning ( yesterday, ed.) we have extensively viewed the images and we consider this a red card.”
