Poland’s Iga Swiatek (WTA 2) has won the WTA Finals in Cancún, Mexico. In the final, Swiatek easily defeated the American Jessica Pegula (WTA 5) 6-1 and 6-0. The match lasted just 59 minutes.
Swiatek won 6-3 and 6-2 in the semi-finals against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who she dethroned in the world rankings after her victory in the final battle. The Polish woman ends the season as the world number one, just like last year. Swiatek occupied the top spot in the WTA rankings for 75 weeks between April 2022 and September 2023, until Sabalenka overtook her.
Swiatek’s record now includes 17 WTA titles. The four-time Grand Slam winner (Roland Garros 2020, 2022 and 2023, US Open 2022) won six WTA tournaments this year and saw her winning streak extend to eleven matches on Monday.
Swiatek is Caroline Garcia’s successor on the honors list. The Frenchwoman was unable to qualify this year. Swiatek is the second Polish woman ever to win the title at the end-of-year tournament with the eight best tennis players of the season. Agnieszka Radwanska did this in 2015.
The WTA Finals program suffered from heavy rain showers in Cancún last week. The finals were therefore postponed by one day.
