Now that the European Championship ticket has been secured for the Red Devils, a lot of work is being done on the practice program towards Euro 2024. In March, the Belgians will go to Wembley for a confrontation with England. “This is the type of opponent we need,” said national coach Domenico Tedesco
On Tuesday, March 26, the Belgians will play against England in the legendary Wembley Stadium in London. England – which bookmakers have put forward as favorites for the European Championship – is currently fourth in the Fifa rankings, one place ahead of the Red Devils. National coach Domenico Tedesco is delighted with a strong opponent like England for a match that is the first major test for the European Championship.
“England are a strong team and the type of opponent we need in the build-up to the European Championship,” Tedesco said. ‘In addition, every football fan dreams of one day being at Wembley. We are really looking forward to it. By playing against strong opponents, we will know better and faster where and how we still have to make progress in order to compete with the big favorites for the title at the European Championship.’
Win and loss in an empty stadium
It will be the 36th confrontation between the two countries. Of the past 35 matches, the Red Devils have won only six compared to 23 victories for England. Six times the match ended in a draw. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Red Devils defeated the English twice: in the group stage they won 1–0 and in the bronze medal match Belgium won 2–0. Both countries also faced each other in the group stage of the 2020 Nations League. Belgium won the match in Leuven 2–0 but lost 2–1 at Wembley. Twice in an empty stadium because of corona.
