A heart-warming gesture from, among others, Rode Duivel Orel Mangala. When 16-year-old Caiden Storry failed to play ‘The Last Post’ to the last note on his trumpet in a packed stadium, the frustrated young man was immediately surrounded by players from Nottingham and Aston Villa to cheer him on. The fact that Nottingham performed a stunt afterwards – thanks to Mangala – was probably also a good thing.

With Armistice Day looming, Caiden Storry, a 16-year-old member of Nottingham Forest, played the famous ‘The Last Post’ on his trumpet before kick-off against Aston Villa. A warm moment. The players from both teams had gathered around the center circle with Storry. The supporters were silent. Normally the young man should have been there three years ago, but Covid then threw a spanner in the works.

There is no adjustment from postponement. The performance last Sunday went smoothly at first, but with 60,000 eyes on him, Storry was unable to play the song in its entirety. The stress was probably getting to him.

What followed was a very warm moment. After a big applause from players, staff and all spectators, many players – including Red Devil Orel Mangala – walked up to a trumpet player who was now very disappointed to cheer him up. With a pat on the head, a handshake or some encouraging words.

Visibly disappointed by what had happened to him, Storry left the field. Although the comforting gestures of the players undoubtedly made him happy. And something tells us that the sad face gave way to a smile an hour and a half later. Because his team Nottingham won 2-0 against Aston Villa. Call it a stunt after Villa’s fantastic start in the Premier League – where Youri Tielemans and Leander Dendoncker once again had to settle for a substitute appearance.

Mangala had his share in the victory. Although Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez looked anything but good. The Argentinian – recent winner of the Yashin Trophy, the trophy for the best goalkeeper – misjudged our compatriot’s shot.
