Match reportLeader Union defeated Club Brugge 2-1. The lightning-fast Mohamed Amoura scored twice for the Brussels team. Thanks to this victory, Union is 12 points ahead of the West Flemish.
LOOK. Standout Mohamed Amoura: “Always do a bicycle kick during training”
Initially, Club Brugge still demanded the ball and there was some carelessness on both sides. A blocked shot by Lapoussin was the first warning. Amoura’s opening goal was one to cherish. Puertas served the Algerian and he delivered a sensational bicycle kick. It was the signal for the home team to push through. Mignolet had a great parade on another shot from Amoura.
After the break, the people of Brussels continued the momentum. The ubiquitous Amoura pushed through well and served Puertas. He kicked over Mignolet’s goal. Lapoussin scored with a place ball and Lazare actually tried with a header. It was indicative of Union’s eagerness.
De Cuyper’s equalizer came out of nowhere. He outwitted Moris from an oblique angle. For a while it looked like Bruges would really restore the balance. For a bit. Union picked up the thread again and once again created a threat. Standout Amoura – a new trendsetter in this competition – was able to continue at speed and give the home team the lead. In the final phase, Rodriguez was knocked down in the penalty area. He put himself behind the ball, but missed a third Brussels goal.
WATCH ALSO. Alessio Castro-Montes: “We know Amoura is a weapon”
Alessio Castro-Montes played a strong game on the right flank. Did he ever score a goal like Amoura in the first half? “Perhaps during training. Although, the referee should actually give us time to all watch the replay quietly and enjoy it. It was so fantastically beautiful. Unfortunately, there is no big screen in the Dudenpark (laughs). There were some phases in which Bruges could pose a threat. That’s normal, it’s still about Club. Overall, however, we had the party firmly under control.”
Union retains the leading position in the Jupiler Pro League. Alessio Castro-Montes remains calm. “We are not currently concerned with rankings. We would rather be twelve points ahead than twelve behind. Yet I put everything into perspective. After the championship the points are halved. Then it is only six points more. Or six already.”
On the left flank, Cameron Puertas attracted all the attention. The Spanish Swiss confirmed the high level he is reaching this season. “I think we achieved a top performance against Club Brugge. We played against an absolute top club in our competition. Although we were able to grab Bruges by the throat at times, we still had to pay attention. They proved that when they conceded the goal. At that moment we even had to be careful not to get a second cold shower. Fortunately, we were able to quickly pick up the positive wire again. In the final phase we were again able to provide most of the threat ourselves. Rodriguez could have completely secured this win. Fortunately, his miss had no influence on the positive end result.”
