The only major downside to Anderlecht’s victory against Cercle Brugge? The concerns about captain Jan Vertonghen, who had to leave just before the whistle with pain in his ankle. “Hopefully nothing is broken inside,” the Red Devil said afterwards.

In minute 62, Jan Vertonghen took a heavy blow to his left ankle after an unfortunate duel with Alan Minda. The defender received a painkiller from the medical staff and continued to play for another twenty minutes – with a grimace at times.

Amazingly, Vertonghen even pulled off a hard tackle to prevent an honor saver from Cercle – see the images below.

Shortly before the whistle, Vertonghen went to the side, a bit shaken.
“I got a kick on my bad left ankle,” said a limping captain afterwards in the mixed zone. “Hopefully nothing is broken inside.”

Vertonghen was already struggling with the same ankle at the end of last season, but was forced to continue during the weeks of truth.

The coming days will reveal whether the record international is fit enough to be called up by national coach Domenico Tedesco for the international matches against Serbia and Azerbaijan.
