European champion Michael Vanthourenhout and number three Lars van der Haar were joined on the European Championship podium by Cameron Mason. The 23-year-old Briton found a course to his liking in Pontchâteau and managed to crown a strong race with a silver medal.
For Mason it is a European Championship medal with a special edge. The talented cyclo-cross rider had to deal with a death within the family a few days ago. “This is for my mother and also for my grandfather, who unfortunately passed away last Friday. I am very happy that I can do this for him,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws afterwards.
“This is a dream come true. I rode my own race and made few mistakes. The fact that this ends in a silver medal is fantastic. The public wants to see the best riders and today I was one of them,” Mason is very happy with his silver medal.
Stranger in our midst
A striking fact: Mason is the first non-Dutch and non-Belgian on the podium of the European championship among the elite men. Since the first edition in 2015, only Belgians and Dutch have stood on the European Championship podium. Belgium has so far won sixteen European Championship medals, for the Netherlands the counter currently stands at ten.
