Steven Defour has no longer been the coach of KV Mechelen for three days. The cup defeat was the straw that broke the camel’s back. But his story at Malinwa may still be far from written.
KV Mechelen and Steven Defour parted ways after the cup exit. Fred Vanderbiest did the honors for the time being. And that immediately resulted in a point against Standard, an encouraging and hopeful start.
Malinwa is still looking for a new coach for the A-team and has not yet made a decision about who that should be. With Hollerbach, Leko and Brys, many well-known names with a past in the Jupiler Pro League were dropped.
On board again in a different role?
“Trainer and club decided together that it is better to part ways. We thank Steven for his dedication and professionalism as T1 at Malinwa. His attitude shows great respect for the club,” Malinwa said in the club statement at the end of the collaboration.
And according to Gazet van Antwerpen, this is precisely where the seeds of a possible bright future lie. Defour has indicated that he wants to step away from football for a while, but within Mechelen the door is open for him to bring him back on board in a different role.
