The Belgians did not break any ground on the final day of the European Judo Championships. Karel Foubert and Vicky Verschaere went out in the first round, Toma Nikiforov and Sami Chouchi a round later.

With Toma Nikiforov (-100kg) and Sami Chouchi (-90kg), the Belgians still had two irons in the fire for a medal on the final day, the first at this European Judo Championships in Montpellier.

But the two experienced judokas, who had already won medals at the European Championships in the past, did not have their day and both went out in the second round. Nikiforov lost against a Russian with ippon, Chouchi was no match for a Frenchman after two waza’ari’s.

Karel Foubert (-90kg) and Vicky Verschaere (-78kg) also came into action today. They did not survive the first round.

The balance after three days of the European Championships looks particularly poor for Belgium: for the first time since 2017, our country does not win a single medal at the European Judo Championships.
