The visitors were initially lucky that Kai Havertz was allowed to remain on the field after an attack on Sean Longstaff’s ankle.
That luck ran out just after the hour when Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the match.
The VAR had to sweat during that phase, because it was actually checked three times whether the goal was valid: first to check whether the ball had not crossed the back line, then whether no violation had been committed and finally whether there had been no there was offside.
The answer was no three times and so Newcastle takes the win. Arsenal are currently third, but tomorrow they can be moved to 5th place by Liverpool and Aston Villa.
