Goals:
36′ Leysen 1-0
83′ Narrow 1-1
84′ Rasmussen 2-1
Union itself has been the underdog for years and was therefore not guilty of underestimating against second national team Meux – unlike others in the Croky Cup.
Except for one surprising minute, that is.
Blessin may have brought an experimental team between the lines, but it was the basic debutants Elton Kabangu and Henok Teklab who bombarded the initial phase with constant waves of attacks on the left flank.
Meux shivered and shook along the line on the left, but it was only in the 36th minute that it actually broke. On a corner kick, 20-year-old Fedde Leysen capitalized on the dominance with a goal.
A blow that the visitors seemed unable to overcome. Union completely controlled the match from that moment on.
But like a bolt from the blue, the sold-out section in the Duden Park suddenly exploded. Union had apparently also lulled itself to sleep and scored the equalizer on a counter in the 83rd minute through Smal, the most dangerous man at Meux.
Panic among Blessin and his followers? No, Union simply does not participate in that. On the contrary. The next attack was immediately a prize for the home team. Puertas presented Rasmussen – with a clever ball – for the 2-1 final score.
Nothing happened, right?
Fedde Leysen (goal scorer at Union): “We started well, but missed many opportunities. We could have scored 3 or 4 times in an excellent first half, but still let Meux into the game. In the end it becomes even more exciting, but fortunately we score immediately. It was a great match to play, made possible by the sold-out section of the away fans. And we must also compliment the Meux players. They played well and showed us that we really have to take our chances in such a match. And now the top match against Club Brugge: that is a fun match to play.”
