Due to a rain break they had to wait a while, but Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter also won their 2nd doubles match at the WTA Finals. The second seeds won in straight sets.
Elise Mertens and the Australian Storm Hunter had already taken the first step towards victory on Tuesday evening. After a difficult first set (7-5), they immediately had a break in the second set. Just then the heavens opened over Cancun, Mexico.
After a night of rest, the Belgian-Australian duo had to finish the job. After several break opportunities on both sides, it seemed to be getting exciting when Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez made it 4-4. But Mertens and Hunter immediately hit back and won 6-4.
They take the lead in their group and will face Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs in the last group match.
Last year, the 27-year-old Mertens won the prestigious tournament with the best duos of the season alongside the Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
