Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday rejected Western allegations about the war in Ukraine at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. He also talked about the “impunity” of Kiev. He left the room immediately after his speech.

Lavrov, who was nearly 90 minutes late for the start of the special session, told his counterparts, including Ukraine’s Dmitro Kuleba, that Ukraine owes its impunity to its Western partners.

The foreign minister launched a diatribe about the “totalitarian Nazi state of Ukraine, which violates the norms of international humanitarian law. The United States and its allies, with the knowledge of international human rights organizations, have reported the crimes committed by the regime in Kyiv (since 2014, ed.) covered up,” Lavrov said, echoing his colleagues who denounced the abuses committed by the Russian military in Ukraine and condemned the invasion.

“Ukraine was a threat”

Lavrov also rejected the work of the International Criminal Court in advance. “Russia has no confidence in that.”

Western weapons teachings to Ukraine and the training of soldiers are “direct interference in the war,” Lavrov said strenuously. “Those countries are trying to prolong the fighting, despite the casualties and the havoc, to exhaust and weaken Russia.”

The decision to launch the special military operation, as Moscow calls the war, was “inevitable,” he concluded. “Ukraine was a threat to Russia’s security.”
