French ski stations question opening due to expensive energy: ‘Situation is catastrophic’

Many ski stations face a renewal of their three-year energy contract in the fall, reports France 3 Rhone-Alpes. This includes the holiday village of Villard-de-Lans with 125 kilometers of ski slopes near Grenoble. “We are unable to sign a new contract with EDF (Electricite de France, ed.) at the current prices”, says director Sébastien Giraud. The price per megawatt hour has gone up about twenty times, from 55 euros last year to something between 800 and 1,000 euros according to current prices.

“Currently, the energy bill represents about 5 percent of our turnover,” says Giraud. “With current prices, that will rise to 20 to 25 percent. As things stand, we cannot open the ski station because we cannot pay the electricity bill.” A closure would immediately start a chain reaction, he warns, because ski schools and restaurants would also bear the consequences.

Frédéric Géromin, president of the ski resorts in Isère, confirms the problem. “If there is no solution, the question arises whether we can open,” he says. According to Géromin, the well-known ski areas Alpes d’Huez and Deux Alpes are also about to renew their energy contracts.

More expensive ski trip

In Le Figaro says Patrick Arnaud of Compagnie des Alpes, which operates the ski areas of La Plagne and Les Arcs, that there can be no closures. According to him, the responsibility of ski resorts goes beyond paying operational bills and involves too much economic activity. The sector also fears that doomsday tidings will have a negative impact on reservations.

The tourism sector is already hoping for help from the government. In addition, part of the higher costs will undoubtedly be passed on to tourists: skiing will become more expensive. Some time ago, experts from Austria also warned about this.
