At least 10 people have been killed and 15 others injured in a series of stabbings in multiple places in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The police have already identified two suspects, but are currently conducting a large-scale manhunt for them. The two men, both in their thirties, are said to have fled in a black Nissan and were last seen in the city of Regina.

The suspects are 31-year-old Damien Sanderson and 30-year-old Myles Sanderson. The two would have fled in a black Nissan Rogue with the number plate ‘119 MPI’, although according to the police it is possible that the duo has switched vehicles in the meantime. Police warn that the men may be “armed and dangerous” and are urging residents of the province of Saskatchewan and neighboring Alberta and Manitoba to be vigilant.

A possible motive for the suspects is not yet known. Nothing has been released about the mutual relationship between the two men, who have the same last name.

Thirteen crime scenes

The stabbings happened in thirteen different places, including the villages of James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. The first report of a stabbing came in to police at 5:40 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, quickly followed by reports of a series of other stabbing incidents. The dead were found in different locations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are now investigating the crime scenes.

Mostly people of indigenous descent live in the area. James Smith Cree Nation has about 3,400 inhabitants, while Weldon is a very small village with only 200 inhabitants. James Smith Cree Nation is currently under a state of emergency.

The attacks are one of the deadliest acts of violence in Canadian history.

First victims identified

According to the police, the attackers targeted some victims, while other stabbings appeared to be random. Health authorities in Saskatchewan previously reported that several of the injured are “in critical condition”. The police therefore emphasize that the death toll could still rise. Some of the slightly injured victims may have gone to different hospitals for treatment themselves. The police urge them to get in touch.

Some fatalities have already been identified by residents of the region. Resident Michael Brett Burns told APTN National News that his ex Lana Head, the mother of their two daughters, is among the dead. Her male partner also did not survive the attack. In Weldon, 77-year-old widower Wes Petterson is said to have died.

“Horrifying and heartbreaking”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences on Twitter shortly after the attacks. Trudeau called the stabbings “horrific and heartbreaking” and thanked all police officers and first responders involved.

Saskatchewan Prime Minister Scott Moe also responded on Twitter. “There are no words to describe the pain and loss this senseless violence has caused. All of Saskatchewan mourns with the victims and their families,” said Moe.
