In the port of Ghent, a heavy waste fire raged at Renewi in Desteldonk on Sunday morning. A plume of black smoke was visible from afar. The fire brigade called for windows and doors to be closed, but the fire is now under control. ‘Our people are still working on putting out the fires, though.’
The Center fire brigade zone received a report at 7 a.m. of a waste fire in the port of Ghent on the Renewi sites in Desteldonk. “Our people went to the spot and in the meantime were able to get the fire under control,” says spokeswoman for Fire Brigade Zone Center Anouk Veyt.
When the fire broke out, a plume of black smoke was immediately visible above the harbor. Neighbors could also experience some smoke nuisance. “We therefore immediately called on social media to close windows and doors and switch off the ventilation in the house or car in the event of smoke or odor nuisance,” explains Veyt. This appeal mainly applied to the inhabitants of Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Desteldonk, Zelzate and Wachtebeke.
The fire brigade is currently still on site on the Renewi grounds. ‘The fire may be under control, but our people are still working on putting out the fire’, Veyt continues. ‘There are still small fires smoldering in the waste mass and we must first get them under control.’
