Footage showing a cop shooting an unarmed black man in his twenties in his own home is causing a stir in the United States. Donovan Lewis, 20, died on Tuesday after being shot and killed at his home in Columbus, Ohio. The young man was lying in his bed when the police suddenly stormed in. 30-year-old cop Ricky Anderson immediately shot Lewis.

Police officers knocked on Lewis’s apartment about 2 a.m. local time. The officers had warrants for domestic violence and firearm abuse. After a while, a man, not Lewis, opened the door. He had a knife in his pocket and was immediately handcuffed. About a minute later, a second man was arrested in the apartment. The bodycam footage of one of the officers shows how Anderson opens the door of a bedroom in which Lewis was sleeping. Anderson immediately starts firing at the twenties.

The injured Lewis was first handcuffed, after which the officers gave him first aid. The young man eventually had to be taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 3:19 a.m., police said.

The victim’s family is now going to file a complaint, lawyer Rex Elliott said. “Donovan was unarmed and following police orders to get out of bed when he was suddenly shot in cold blood by Officer Anderson,” Elliott said. “The images reveal the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog killed him.”

No weapons found

An investigation has been launched into the incident, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said. He also promises “complete transparency” about the “tragic death of Donovan Lewis”.

Local Police Department chief Elaine Bryant said Anderson fired the shot “at a moment when Lewis seemed to be moving his arm and holding something in his hand.” However, no weapons were found in the vicinity of the twenty-something, only an electronic cigarette.

On Friday, a group of students gathered at Ohio State University to protest police brutality. The incident has also been heavily criticized on social media. For example, the drama is reminiscent of other tragedies in which black people, including George Floyd, were killed during a police intervention.
