Kim Huybrechts sustains fractures in throwing arm in fight after cup final: “I was attacked in the back”

Kim Huybrechts has suffered a serious injury after a day at the cup final. The Belgian darts player and Antwerp supporter went to Heysel with friends and family. After the final he was involved in a fight, in which Huybrechts suffered a double fracture in the collarbone of his right arm – his throwing arm. “Fortunately, those fractures heal quickly,” he remains optimistic.

What was supposed to be a nice outing with his loved ones turned out to be a small nightmare for Kim Huybrechts.

The Belgian darts player – an avid Antwerp supporter – collided with a group of young people after the cup final between Union and Antwerp, he testified on Radio 2.

“The line to the buses was getting long and I wanted to walk past with a friend. Then I suddenly got a push from behind and then a blow with a helmet.”

“When I wanted to go after the perpetrator, I was tackled and fell. Then I was punched again.”

“I didn’t want to risk it getting worse. At home I immediately went to the emergency room and it turned out that my right collarbone was broken in two places.”

That means bad news for our compatriot, because Huybrechts suffered injuries to his right arm – his throwing arm. Huybrechts is now undergoing an operation.

“Fortunately, they told me that fractures to the collarbone are among the fractures that heal the fastest. I would be out for 4 to 6 weeks. So I hope for 4 weeks, because then there is another tournament on the program,” continues ‘The Hurricane’ hopeful.

Brussels police confirmed there were some fights after the cup final, but had no information about any injuries. “I haven’t filed a complaint yet,” he said.

“I didn’t see any police there in that park, which I thought was strange. I also don’t know whether it makes sense to file a complaint, because I don’t know much about the perpetrator.”

The incident is a new blemish on an eventful season for Huybrechts. The Belgian number two in darts was already controversial at the beginning of this year after he threatened fellow darts player Mike De Decker. The disciplinary body of the professional darts federation PDC fined him for this.

Huybrechts has also been at loggerheads with that other Belgian star, Dimitri Van den Bergh, for some time now. The argument was openly expressed last year at the World Cup, the national tournament where Huybrechts played together with Van den Bergh.

The chance that Huybrechts will also play the World Cup with Van den Bergh this year seems minimal due to his shoulder injury. After all, the tournament takes place at the end of June, too short a day for Huybrechts to get completely fit. De Decker may take his place at Van den Bergh’s side.
